Climate and environment

Social impact includes the planet young people will inherit.

Young people will live with the consequences of today’s climate decisions for longest. So we treat climate as part of our social mission, not a side policy. We build low-carbon software, cut our own emissions and give every project a practical way to reduce its footprint.

Our climate pledges

Six commitments we hold ourselves to, and that we can show evidence for as we go.

Net zero by 2050, half by 2030

We are committing to halve our greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050, in line with the UK’s net zero target. We measure our baseline in our first full year and report progress every year.

Low-carbon software by design

We follow the W3C Web Sustainability Guidelines: lean pages, efficient code, no advertising trackers and services that work well on older phones and slower connections.

Renewable-powered hosting

We host live services with providers powered by renewable energy, checked against the Green Web Foundation’s directory of verified green hosts.

Collect less, store less

We only collect the data a service needs and delete it when its purpose is met. Less stored data means less energy used and less risk to the people it describes.

Low-carbon travel

Across London we get to schools, workshops and meetings by public transport, on foot or by bike. We do not fly for UK work, and we meet online when being in the room adds nothing.

Devices that last

We keep equipment in use for as long as possible, buy refurbished where we can and donate retired laptops and phones through the National Device Bank to people who are digitally excluded.

Climate in every project

Every proposal includes an environmental section, with measures written into the contract rather than left as good intentions.

  • Page weight and data storage targets for every service.
  • Support for older devices, so nobody needs a new phone to take part.
  • Data minimisation and deletion dates agreed at the start.
  • Low-carbon delivery of workshops, training and meetings.
  • Where a service supports local access or journeys, how it could cut unnecessary travel.
  • A Carbon Reduction Plan in the government’s PPN 006 format, published within our first full year of reporting.

Climate and social justice are linked.

The communities we work with are often the first to feel heat, poor air and rising energy costs, and young people will carry today’s decisions furthest. Where a project touches climate, nature or the local environment, young people help decide how the service responds.

Each year we publish what we measured, what we changed and what we still need to do. We do not buy offsets to make claims, and we only describe our work as carbon neutral or net zero once the numbers show it.
